The end of school is finally here … is it really here? The girls have had a great year and will actually miss school over the summer. They love interacting with their classmates most, but they do love to learn.
Emily has loved her teacher. Ms Racey has things organized in her class with cute and clever labels. This fits well with Emily’s personality. While she wants order, she allows Emily to express her opinions and is patient to listen to Emily’s stories. Emily always has something to say in class. The class reads a book together after lunch. When Emily figured out we had a copy of one of the books at home, she had to read ahead.
Several students and friends in her class have moved away during the year and this has been a sad thing. Change is a hard thing. Emily has continued to be my rule follower. The fact that not everyone follows the rules still bothers her. If she could police it and change the world (or at least her class) she would.
Julia has enjoyed her teacher and class. She is also a rule follower in class. During the first few months of school, all she would talk about after school was who got in trouble in class. She was a world class people watcher. Figuring it all out was important to her. It was so important that she had trouble staying focused on her tasks, although this improved throughout the year. She made several friends in her class. Mama wishes she could be a fly on the wall in the class sometime to see how Julia interacts in class. When she is in the hall she is quiet and always in line.
Ms Brinkman sends home lots of crafts that they have done in class. Julia loves to put lots of detail into her work. As the year has gone on we have seen Julia start to get the idea of reading. It has been fun to watch. She will continue to read with Grammy to speed up her reading and retention. She had spent most of the year behind in her reading, but as school finishes up she is reading at grade level.
We could not be more proud of the citizens that the girls are in their classes. We are pleased with their love of learning. Humbled by Emily’s passion for reading. Joyful at Julia’s new experiences. Thankful for the friendship and mentoring that occurred this year. Pleased that Mama got to spend so much time in Emily’s class and got to know the kids. And grateful that we are on this journey with the girls!
Now, lets have some fun and play for the whole summer!

This year we celebrated the end of school with a party for both of the girls’ classes and friends. We met at the park and played with friends and classmates who joined us. There were toys available to play with and fruit and cookies snacks. The weather was sunny and clear and we enjoyed our afternoon of play! It was so much fun we will try to do this every year.
My blue eyed almost 3rd grader.
Blue shirts were the color of the day. You would think the girls had phone calls to arrange it, but they are so good they didn’t need to.
These two both have mischievous streaks, bet you could not guess.
A swing that is big enough for two.
Snacks on the snack table, toys in the background.
Tire swinging 2nd graders.
Tire swinging kinderkids.

The girls participated in our church’s annual Christmas program and nativity. It is full of kid cuteness, brave acts, and personally connecting with the story of Jesus’s birth. Emily chose to be a wise-woman again and Julia chose an angel. There was an element of individuality in Julia’s choice, she wanted to be something different than Emily. I love seeing her step into her own. Emily had a short reading part and did a great job of reading clearly and slowly. The little kids were really sweet in the program. They were animals and did their own things. One took his costume off and then was happy to sit on the step. Another child crawled to the manger and spent the rest of the story rubbing baby Jesus’s head. The story is timeless and the kids love telling it. There is no better story to tell than about God coming to us.
The angel watches over her small animal friends.
It seems the Wisemen had secrets to share.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” – Luke 2:8-14

Our Halloween this year was a cool Friday with an excellent chance of rain. Queen Elsa and Princess Anna from the land of Arendelle inspired our warm sweatshirt costumes. We trick-or-treated in our neighborhood and around to the Grandparents house before the rain started. On one side street the girls met up with some friends and they all trick-or-treated that street together. Grammy gave us a ride to the trunk-or-treat that was also in the neighborhood. After playing with more school friends and doing crafts we headed home for dinner and a special showing of Frozen.
The girls need some practice in assertiveness. Getting them to knock loud enough on the door and saying trick-or-treat seemed to be a struggle for them. They were much better with the thank you at the end.
The costume backs!
Trick-or-Treating with the much more outgoing neighborhood kids! At this point the fun of meeting up with friends, seeing Grandparents, and crafting with school friends is much more fun and important to the girls than how much candy they get. Hopefully it will stay that way!

The girls celebrated their birthdays (Emily 8 – January, Julia 6 – October) in another joint party. It did not take too much convincing to get them to agree to a tea party with their favorite dolls and friends. The party was at a local shop that specializes in this type of party. It involved dress-up time including a quick hair up-do and accessories, a photo shoot, tea party, birthday treats, and gift time. The party was a lot of fun. The girls loved it and their mama loved it. The party’s theme was inspired by the movie Frozen.
Emily’s chosen look for her and her "Emily" doll. Her dress was white with blue/green accents, blue/green gloves and boa, and white heeled shoes.
Julia’s chosen look was all pink. Every item was pink with the exception of the clear shoes that lit-up with each step. The friend she brought with her was her Minnie Mouse.
This was a place setting for each girl. The doll friends each got a table setting too. The Olaf dessert was the special touch the girls picked for the party. The tea was pink lemonade.
Our table filled with seven lovely princesses waiting for the birthday wishes to be made. Thanks friends for joining us and making the party such a success!

We celebrated Halloween at Ms. Laurel and Mr. Shawn’s house. The girls had been asking to go out and see our friends and ride their horses, so we made sure we got an invitation. All of us seem to enjoy this yearly event. The girls didn’t have any fear of the horses this year. They rode without saddles and the only complaint I heard was that their rear-ends were a bit sore. Julia especially kept asking for another trip around the yard. The day was beautiful and dry. The evening cooled off a lot when the sun went down, but by then we were settled inside for food and pumpkin carving. No good photos of the pumpkins, but Laurel and Shawn did a great job carving the girls’ original designs. New this year was some additional friends added to the party. Another young family (if we still get to call ourselves a young family) joined in the fun. Their daughter was uncertain about the horse, but once she got started, she did not want to get off either. Our girls enjoyed having two more little people to hang out with.

The only thing Julia didn’t seem to enjoy about the evening was looking at the camera. Oh well. Another successful party. Thanks Laurel and Shawn.
